The project was started by retired Police Officer John Thomas. John was born in Maerdy in 1954 and has spent most of his life living there. He joined the South Wales Constabulary in 1973 and went on to serve his first 15 years as an Area Constable in the Rhondda and then Detective Constable for the village of Maerdy.
He had been aware of the Maerdy War Memorial in Maerdy Park since a very young age but as he got older he could not understand why there were no names on the plinth. In other villages the names of numerous persons were engraved into their monuments but not on the Maerdy Memorial.
Now retired and still living in Maerdy John set out to have the Memorial altered so that the names of the War Dead from Maerdy could be recorded on it. His mission is now almost a reality thanks to the British Legion and the local Council. During the gathering of the details of the War Dead he accumulated a huge amount of information on the individuals. This information has now been collated and released as the first in a series of books about Maerdy's involvement in both the First and Second World Wars.
The series of books is expanding to include books on other villages in the Rhondda and will ultimately build into a fascinating record of the exploits and sacrifices of the people of the Rhondda.
